The Town of Huntington can be found in the northwestern Suffolk County, New York. It shares its borders with the neighboring towns of Nassau County and Long Island Sound. During the colonial period, Huntington was a small farming community that had a church and school. It also had brickyards and mills. In the mid-1800s, ship building and fishing were important industries. While the town still relied on its own farms, there was plenty of work to be done in the other parts of the city. Today, Huntington is one of Long Island's largest bedroom communities.
The Town Board of Huntington approved in 1852 a contract to demolish a house. The goal of the demolition was to create a parking lot for the town's sewer plant. The Town Board tried to salvage as much of the house as possible. Many residents were not happy with this decision and an online petition was created. The media and community leaders met to discuss other options to demolish the building. They found a solution.
Peter Crippen's house was a significant link to the area's nineteenth century African American history. He was one the seven founders the African Methodist Ebenezer Church, now Bethel AME Church. 1985 saw the church listed on the National Register. His neighbor to the south served as a trustee of the church's incorporation. As an African-American, Crippen was a fisherman and laborer.
In 1676, Eliphalet Jones was appointed as the Town's second resident minister. The Town paid Eliphalet Jones a stipend as well as 20 acres of land. Thomas Powell was elected Town Clerk in 1689 and refused to pay the minister’s rate. Powell, a Quaker who refused to support the Congregationalist minister, was not able to vote for him. He served as the Town's representative before the newly appointed Royal Governor. This deed is the first evidence of a minister's involvement in Huntington.
Many landmarks in Huntington were featured in movies, including the Village of Northport from Sisters. Oheka Castle featured in Taylor Swift's music video for "Blank Space". Another location was used to film several episodes of the television series Royal Pains. At its eastern terminus, the town has a Long Island Rail Road station. This route is served by several highways in the surrounding area.
