The Commack area was initially known as Comac and was primarily a farming community. The area was first incorporated as a village around Townline Road and Jericho Turnpike. In 1906, the U.S. Postal Service changed the spelling to Commack to prevent confusion. Before that, mail for Comac and Coram was often mixed up and confusing. With the new spelling, postal services no longer mixed up the mail in the area, so Commack became the preferred choice.


Another exciting place in Commack is the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. This building was once the home of Dr. Darling B. Whitney and was later sold to the Brooklyn Baptist Young People's Union in 1915. It was their main building, while the dorms were across fields. In 2016, the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated its 50th anniversary. This group is dedicated to saving lives and helping the community.
